We Continues to Face Fiscal Challenges

We expect the budget for the 2016-17 school year (FY 2017) to be a challenge, with expenditures increasing faster than the revenue available. With the County's preliminary budget guidance we may need to make significant reductions to balance the FY 2017 budget.

The overall cost of educating our growing and increasingly diverse student enrollment is rising faster than the funding available to us. We are required to have a balanced budget. Without additional funding, more cuts must be made. In order to close these significant shortfalls all options must be considered, including eliminating or reducing many programs that our community value.

Community Engagement Process

Community input, discussion, and engagement are critical to shaping the difficult decisions that will be necessary to balance the budget. As part of the budget process, ideas on what to cut, reduce, or redesign as well as how to increase revenue through fees, have been developed with input from the community. To continue to engage the community and assist the Budget Task Force with its work, we are now asking the community for their ideas on how to address the projected budget shortfall for FY 2017. We have launched an online Budget Builderl Tool for this purpose. This tool will allow you to select options from an initial menu of ideas that have been collected from the community, and/or add user-created options to create your own reduction scenarios.

The proposals submitted via the Budget Builder Tool through September 25, 2015, will be shared with the Budget Task Force for their review prior to providing their input to the Superintendent in October. The Superintendent and School Board will continue to gather and consider input submitted through the Budget Builder Tool throughout the FY 2017 budget development process.
